Ka Mariang chooses a different path.

Hidden among the whispering forests and rolling hills of Meghalaya sits a weathered tree stump. Upon it rests a peaceful Buddha, smiling gently—not to be admired, but to remind every traveller who pauses there that the most extraordinary moments are often the quietest.

You won't find crowds gathered around this little sanctuary. There are no queues, no ticket booths, no hurried footsteps. Just the rustling of leaves, the distant melody of birds, the cool mountain breeze, and a silence so complete that it almost feels alive.

It is here that time begins to soften.

The Buddha seems perfectly at home upon the old stump, as though nature itself chose this spot long before Ka Mariang came into being. A tree that once reached towards the sky now offers its final gift — a place for reflection, for gratitude, and for stillness. It is a gentle reminder that beauty doesn't disappear with age; it simply changes its form.

Many visitors come searching for waterfalls, winding mountain roads, hidden villages, or the famous living root bridges of Meghalaya. They leave with photographs of breathtaking landscapes.

But those who linger a little longer at Ka Mariang often carry home something far more precious.

A feeling.

Perhaps it is the way the morning mist slowly lifts from the hills while the first rays of sunlight touch the Buddha's face. Perhaps it is the warmth of a freshly brewed cup of tea after a walk through the forest. Or perhaps it is simply the rare experience of sitting somewhere without needing to check the time.

In today's world, stillness has become a luxury.

At Ka Mariang, it is part of the landscape.

There is no itinerary for this moment. No right way to experience it. Sit on a nearby bench. Listen to the wind weaving through the trees. Watch butterflies drift between wildflowers. Let the forest speak in a language older than words.

And then, almost without noticing, you may find that the journey you thought was taking you across Meghalaya has quietly become a journey back to yourself.

The Buddha on the stump is not Ka Mariang's biggest attraction.

And like all the best-kept secrets, it cannot truly be explained.

Nobody warned us it would be like this.

We had gone to bed late — long after the bonfire had turned to embers and the last cup of tea had gone cold. The plan, such as it was, had been to sleep in. To do nothing. To rest in the particular way that only a place like Ka Mariang allows.

But at 5:47 in the morning, something woke us.

Not a sound, exactly. More like the absence of one. The kind of quiet that presses gently on your ears and makes you want to open your eyes just to check that the world is still there.

It was.

And it was wrapped entirely in mist.

The hills had disappeared. The trees at the far edge of the retreat had softened into grey-green suggestions of themselves. The path outside — the one lined with marigolds and small solar lamps — was barely visible, as though it led somewhere that hadn't quite decided to exist yet.

We stood in the doorway for a long time. Not speaking. There was nothing to say that the mist wasn't already saying better.

By the time the sun began to push through — slowly, almost apologetically — the whole retreat had turned to gold. The cottages glowed. The dew on the grass caught the light like scattered glass. A bird we didn't recognise began to sing from somewhere in the bamboo.

It lasted perhaps twenty minutes, this particular version of the morning.

Then it was gone, and the day became an ordinary beautiful day.

But those twenty minutes — they are the reason we are writing this.

No alarm can prepare you for it.

You just have to be here.

There is a point on the drive to Ka Mariang where the GPS gives up.

Not dramatically — it doesn't announce its surrender or offer a last-ditch rerouting. It simply goes quiet, leaving you with a road that curves gently upward into the hills, and the growing suspicion that you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

Getting to Meghalaya has its own particular rhythm. Flights into Shillong or Guwahati, then the road — winding, green, full of surprises. The landscape changes almost every hour. Paddy fields give way to pine forests. Small towns appear and disappear. Roadside stalls sell things you've never seen before and wish you'd stopped for.

Then the hills begin in earnest.

The air changes first. You notice it through the window before you think to roll it down — cooler, cleaner, carrying something faintly sweet that you can't quite name. By the time you arrive at Ka Mariang, you have already been arriving for hours. The journey prepares you for the place, even if you don't realise it.

A few things nobody tells you before you come:

The roads after dark are best driven slowly — not because they are dangerous, but because the sky out here deserves your full attention.

Bring a layer you don't think you'll need. You will need it.

Leave earlier than you plan to. Not because you'll get lost, but because you'll want to stop.

And when you finally turn off the main road and follow the track down toward the retreat — when you catch that first glimpse of the thatched rooftops through the trees, and the smell of woodsmoke reaches you before anything else does — you will understand why people come here and find it very difficult to leave.

The road to Ka Mariang is part of the experience.
